It’s a common scenario: someone uses ChatGPT to write a batch of blog posts, then hears from a colleague that Google is going to “find out” and tank their site. The instinct is to delete everything and start over.
That’s almost certainly unnecessary. Google evaluates content based on quality, helpfulness, and whether it satisfies the person searching. How the content was produced is secondary.
That’s the short answer. The longer answer, and the one that actually matters for your rankings, is about what you do with that content after the AI spits it out.
SEO has “died” probably half a dozen times since the early 2010s. AI-generated content is the latest thing that’s supposed to kill it. The real answer is more nuanced than people want it to be, and honestly, more interesting than a simple yes or no.

Google’s actual stance on AI content
Here’s what Google has said, and they’ve been pretty clear about it: they evaluate content based on quality, helpfulness, and whether it satisfies the person searching. The method of production is beside the point. A mediocre article is a mediocre article, whether a human wrote it or ChatGPT did. Both get overlooked.
Where people get tripped up is the assumption that “AI-generated” automatically means “low quality.” Those two things can overlap, but they exist independently. Google’s EEAT framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) looks at whether the final product demonstrates genuine knowledge and adds something useful to the conversation. Whether you typed every word yourself or used an AI to help you draft it is irrelevant to that evaluation.

And here’s worth knowing: the worst Google will do with an AI-written page that adds minimal value is simply skip indexing it. They’ll look at it, see it’s rephrasing what’s already out there, and move on. The page just quietly sits there, which, in practical terms, means you spent time on content that could have been stronger.
This week: Search your own site in Google using site:yourdomain.com and check which of your recent pages are actually indexed. If some are missing from the results, that’s a signal to revisit whether those pages are adding something the search results lack.
When AI content becomes a problem
I’ve seen agents crank out 20 articles a week using AI, copy-paste them onto their site, and wonder why nothing is ranking. Google has a penalty in their algorithm called Scaled Content Abuse, and it exists for exactly this scenario. When you produce a massive volume of content that’s essentially rephrasing what every other website already says, you’re adding noise to the conversation rather than contributing to it.
The other trap I see is what I think of as the “ChatGPT voice.” You know it when you read it, right? The structure is too clean, the phrasing is too polished, and there’s this flatness where personality should be. Google’s algorithms are getting better at recognizing it. And even if it slips past the algorithms today, it chips away at the trust you’re trying to build with the people who actually visit your site.
I had a client whose competitor was ranking for a pretty competitive keyword with an article that was surprisingly short. When I looked closer, the content clearly came from first-hand experience. The agent had his own TV show, published books, appeared on podcasts. People searched his name all the time. Meanwhile, the competitor pumping out 15 AI-generated posts a month was stuck in place. That tells you something about what Google is rewarding right now.
For context: nearly half of our clients’ blog content that’s been rank-checked holds the #1 position on Google, and 3 out of 4 are in the Top 3. That’s from content built around genuine expertise and local authority, which is also exactly the kind of content Google rewards over volume plays.
This week: Pick your three most recent AI-assisted blog posts and read them out loud. If they sound like they could’ve been written by anyone in any market about any topic, they need your fingerprints on them. Add a personal story, a local data point, or an opinion only you’d have.
How to use ChatGPT without hurting your rankings
I’m pro-AI. I tell my clients to go for it: use ChatGPT, use Claude, use whatever tool makes you faster. Just always review and personalize before you publish.
When you’re prompting, context is everything. The least effective approach is typing “write a blog post about homes in my area” and hitting enter. Instead, feed the AI your own experience. Tell it which neighborhoods you want to cover, what your clients have been asking you lately, what the Q1 market data looked like. If you have sources you want cited or transaction data you want included, put that into the prompt. The more of yourself you pour into the input, the more useful the output.
The other thing people overlook is negative prompting. When you’re telling an AI what to do, also tell it what to avoid. Skip cliches. Stick to verified statistics. Stay away from that generic AI voice. I think those guardrails make a real difference in what comes back.
And then you’ve got to review it. LLMs still hallucinate, so you need to fact-check, and then you need to layer on what only you can provide: your perspective on your market, your experience with your clients, the things you’ve seen with your own eyes that AI has zero access to.
There’s a reason localized content performs so well. Our clients’ neighborhood guide pages rank on Google Page 1 99.8% of the time. That kind of dominance comes from content rooted in specific places, specific expertise, and specific value to the reader. The more local and personal you make your AI-assisted content, the better it performs.
This week: Before your next AI-assisted post, spend 10 minutes voice-recording your own thoughts on the topic. Talk about what you’ve seen in your market, what your clients are asking, what surprised you recently. Then feed that transcript into your AI prompt as context.
Good SEO and “AI optimization” are the same thing
I need to get on a bit of a soapbox here. There are a lot of people out there peddling “Answer Engine Optimization,” “Generative Engine Optimization,” AEIOU, whatever acronym is trending this month, and charging a premium for what is essentially just SEO with a new label.
Be skeptical. When we look at client data, the sites that perform well in traditional Google search are the same ones getting cited in ChatGPT and Gemini. It tracks together. When organic rankings climb, AI citations follow. When organic drops, AI mentions fall with it. There’s one playbook, and it works everywhere.
The numbers tell the story clearly. Across our client base, we’re tracking 12,691 #1 Google rankings and 26,715 Page 1 positions. 79% of our clients hold at least one #1 ranking. Blog content ranks in the Top 3 on Google 73% of the time. That same content is what AI platforms are pulling from when they generate answers. The fundamentals are the strategy.
And if you think about it, that makes sense. AI platforms like ChatGPT use retrieval systems that go out and scrape the web for answers. The content they pull tends to be the same stuff Google already considers authoritative: well-structured, genuinely helpful, written by someone who clearly knows the topic. So if you’re doing SEO well, you’re already doing “AI optimization” whether you call it that or you pay someone to rename it.
I’d also push back on the idea that you need new tools to track your “AI rankings.” The results are wildly volatile right now. The same prompt can return completely different brands in a completely different order from one session to the next. The bottom line here: put your energy into the fundamentals. Helpful content, strong brand awareness, legitimate backlinks, and a website that shows you’re a genuine expert. That’s what gets you showing up everywhere that matters.
This week: Instead of researching new AI-specific tools, audit whether your existing content passes the “would I find this helpful?” test. Open your five most-trafficked blog posts and, for each one, Google the keyword you’re targeting and pull up whatever is ranking number one. Read both side by side.
Better yet, paste both into Claude or ChatGPT and ask it to tell you where the competing page is stronger, where yours has gaps, and what you’d need to add to close the distance. You’ll get a pretty direct breakdown of where your content is falling short, and that’s a much better use of AI than chasing some new ranking tool.
The bottom line
The difference between AI content that ranks and AI content that stalls comes down to whether you’re using it as a shortcut to skip the work or as a tool that helps you do better work faster.
The data backs up the approach. Across our client base, keywords are improving at a 2.3-to-1 ratio over those declining. The agents doing the fundamentals right are gaining ground steadily.
I think the agents who figure this out now are going to be in a really strong position, because what Google rewards has stayed remarkably consistent. They want content from people who know what they’re talking about, written for people who are trying to make a decision. If that describes what you’re publishing, the AI you used to help draft it is beside the point. All Google cares about is the result.
